The “Olympic” History

3 x Olympic Games in Seefeld – 1964, 1976, 2012

Seefeld has twice been host to the Winter Olympics in the disciplines of cross-country skiing and Nordic combination. The Olympic flame was lit in Innsbruck for the first time in 1964, and then again in 1976 when Innsbruck/Seefeld played host to the Winter Olympics for the second time and once again attracted thousands of enthusiastic fans to the region. There was no escaping the magical Olympic spirit as cross-country skiers and Nordic combined athletes battled for victory. But its was not only the sportsmen and women who gave their best – the hosts in the Olympiaregion likewise pulled out all the stops to play their part in making  history and ensure an unforgettable Olympic experience.

1st Winter Youth Olympic Games 2012

The 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games are being held in Innsbruck and Seefeld from 13th to 22nd January 2012. A total of 1,058 athletes aged 14 to 18 from over 70 nations will be testing their sporting ability in 63 competitions. The disciplines ski jumping, Nordic combination and biathlon are being held in Seefeld’s Nordic Competence Centre.
As hosts of the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games, Seefeld and Innsbruck have the privilege of welcoming the Olympic family for the third time after 1964 and 1976, an honour that makes us enormously proud.

The region’s outstanding infrastructure is perfectly tailored to handle the requirements of such a major sporting event. 2010 saw the creation of two new ski jumps and a roller ski track. The state-of-the-art biathlon facilities, which opened in the winter of 2009/2010, meet the very highest standards and provide ideal conditions for the biathlon competitions. Not only the region’s infrastructure has received outstanding praise, but also its network of cross-country skiing trails which has been ranked among the top 3 several times over by the renowned ADAC ski magazine.

1985 Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld

The Nordic World Ski Championships take place every second (odd-numbered) year in the disciplines of Nordic Skiing (cross-country, ski jumping and Nordic combined). The event is organized by the International Ski Federation FIS. In 1985 Seefeld hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships and was able to provide excellent conditions, wonderful scenery and perfect hosts.

We still like to look back on this event and you can still anecdotes about it during après-ski. Since 2004 the region has been carrying on with its internationally recognized successes with the Double World Cup for Nordic Combined, which is hosted  every year in January and is one of the highlights of events in Seefeld with more than 15.000 spectators.
