Source of the Isar / Scharnitz

“A very beautiful river. I have often listened to it, looked into its eyes, and always learned from it.“ (Hermann Hesse)

Isarursprung

On the way to its confluence with the Danube, the Isar runs into the main Bavarian river. In earlier times, it spread fear and horror when it was in flood but also brought luck and blessings for the villages along its banks and the Isar is still a part of the culture and history of the Alpine region today.

At the source of the Isar, near its spring, there are numerous points where the water flows out of the rocks all year round. The upper Isar is also a popular place for canoe enthusiasts and paddleboat fans. They enjoy the excellent water quality and the wonderful countryside of the nature reserve Alpenpark Karwendel.
