Route: Scharnitz – Mittenwald
10 % asphalt, 90 % walking trail, easy forest track
Starting in Scharnitz, you can either turn left at inn Gasthof Risserhof onto the river Isar promenade and follow it to the border, where you cross the bridge to the left towards Riedboden; or you can turn right at a large timber yard straight over to the Isar and follow the walking trail to Mittenwald. The paths merge just before Mittenwald and take you through the Mittenwald fields to the indoor tennis courts. From there the road leads into the village. Going straight ahead at the big bridge will take you into the pedestrian area. The return route takes you back via the Scharnitz – Riedboden walking trail, or you can turn left at the bridge onto the walking trail sign-posted “über die Hoffelder”, following the railway line all the way except for one short detour into the woods. NB: You have to cross the railway line just before reaching Scharnitz. Then you have to turn and double back about 50 m towards Mittenwald in order to get back to the river Isar over a little bridge. After the bridge, keep to your left and cross another little bridge near Scharnitz. Keep to your right to get back onto the riverside promenade which takes you straight back into the village centre.
Places of interest: Mittenwald (historic centre), Porta Claudia (fortress ruin).
