Here in the Olympiaregion Seefeld, the Olympic torch has burned no fewer than three times. The region was the scene of the Nordic disciplines during the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, and during the 2012 Youth Winter Olympic Games.
In 1985 Seefeld was the venue of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, during which it provided not only immaculate conditions, but also a breathtaking natural backdrop and perfect organisation. Owing to the optimum conditions created by the superbly groomed cross-country ski tracks, the excellent infrastructure and the outstanding Nordic Competence Centre, the Olympiaregion Seefeld has, once more, been selected as the venue for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019.
In summer 2010 new biathlon and ski jumping facilities were constructed, along with a new roller-ski circuit for use during the summer months. The existing biathlon facilities were modernised and adapted to the very latest standards to ensure optimum conditions for future competitions.
The Olympiaregion Seefeld has been the host of the annual World Cup Nordic Combined Triple event since 2004, a contest that is hailed as THE highlight of the winter season for athletes and spectators alike. A further top sporting event is the Euroloppet Ganghoferlauf Leutasch race, one of the contests of the well-known Euroloppet series of cross-country marathons.
