Even during the preliminary stages of putting together the concept, a strong focus was placed on key issues, such as construction work planning, the touristic infrastructure and ensuring minimum impact on the natural environment. When it came to planning and creating Nordic ski routes that make optimum use of the already existing local facilities, an expert – Hermod Bjorkestol – was brought on board to assist.
The cross-country ski routes to be included in the candidature application were planned during the course of a work project in collaboration with the Austrian Ski Federation’s cross-country skiing advisor Dietmar Miklautsch and Hermod Bjorkestol. Seventy percent of the already existing network of tracks was integrated into the concept, with only a minimum amount of additional construction work necessary. This, once again, underscores the core principle of the overall concept, i.e. of hosting the 2019 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with the absolute minimum impact on nature and the surrounding countryside.
The resulting cross-country skiing concept for the 2019 candidature is a selection of fantastic routes covering distances of 1.3 km and 1.5 km for the sprint competitions, 3.75 km for the biathlon contests and 5 km for all other disciplines, including the mass start and team races. The expert planning of the routes, taking environmental aspects into close consideration, speaks for itself. The Olympiaregion Seefeld and the candidature team are now looking forward to the FIS Conference in Barcelona where the venue for the 2019 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships will be officially announced.
