Cross-country skiing with kids – here’s how it works!

In our Ski – Hike – Eat – Repeat feature, we’ve already shown you how to make a cross-country day a little different. But once you notice your enthusiasm for skiing catching on with your loved ones, it’s time – from now on, it’s all about hitting the skinny skis together!

Some might immediately picture the next horror scenario: kids lying in the snow, crying, refusing to move another inch. To make sure those mental images don’t become reality, we’ve gathered six tried-and-tested tips for you. Family time full of unique memories instead of stress and frustration – here we go!

1. Age matters

As a rule of thumb, it’s recommended to start cross-country skiing from around the age of four. But of course, you know your children best – regardless of age, every child differs in coordination and stamina. So it’s up to you to decide when the time is right to hit the trails together. Begin with the classic technique, as its movements are very similar to walking. If your kids are already confident on inline skates or ice skates, you can even give skating a try (otherwise generally recommended from around eight years old).

2. The right equipment

The right gear is half the battle! The many rental shops in the area will have exactly what you need. Knowledgeable staff on-site will set you up with the latest cross-country boots, skis, and poles.

When it comes to clothing, think layers – the onion principle is key for both adults and kids! Dress in layers according to the weather, but make sure everyone can still move freely – looking like a little Michelin Man might be cute, but it’s not exactly practical on the trail!

3. Choosing the right trail

The cross-country network in the region is almost endless – in the best possible way 😉 Still, picking the right route for your family adventure is key. Not too steep, not too long, not too exhausting – but also not too boring. There are quite a few factors to keep in mind if you want to avoid the dreaded meltdown scenario. One thing’s for sure: a scenic environment, inviting refreshment stops, and the option to shorten (or extend) the tour flexibly are three must-have ingredients for a successful family outing.

Planning tip: You can easily check all trails and their conditions online before you even leave home. The daily updated trail report provides up-to-date information on the status of each cross-country track.

4. Hunger? No chance!

Let’s be honest: hungry kids (and adults 😉) are the grumpiest creatures on earth! Once blood sugar levels drop, so does the mood – instantly. To avoid that, always pack a few good-mood snacks in your pockets. And of course, don’t skip a stop at one of the cosy huts along the trail. With energy levels refilled, everything on the trail feels a whole lot easier!

5. “Mum – Dad – booooring!”

No one wants to hear that. So once you’re on the trail, one thing should take centre stage: fun and play! For curious kids, endless kilometres of skiing aren’t exactly thrilling – no matter how stunning the winter scenery may be. Pack a small ball, a frisbee, or a scarf, and you’re good to go. What brings fun at the beach in summer is just as great on cross-country skis in winter: tag, ski football, or hockey – all guaranteed mood boosters. Plus, they naturally improve balance, coordination, and ski handling without even noticing!

Tip: Good company! If you can, join other families for a day on the trails (or maybe even take a group ski lesson together). Everything’s more fun when other kids are around – and suddenly, everything just flows!

6. Last but not least: Nobody’s perfect!

Just like in everyday life – give yourselves and your kids plenty of space for imperfection on the trail. As the saying goes, no master has ever fallen from the sky. In the end, it’s not about flawless technique or the number of kilometres covered. It’s about your time together as a family – laughing, having fun outdoors, and creating precious memories that last a lifetime.

Good mood tip: If your day doesn’t quite go as planned, take Oscar Wilde’s advice to heart: “After a good meal, one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relatives.” Treat yourselves to something nice – and simply try again the next day!
