A Look Back: The Origin and Significance of the World Championship Tower

Background & History

The World Championship Tower was built in preparation for the 2019 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships – a major sporting event that took place in Seefeld for the second time after 1985. As part of extensive modernization and construction measures, the distinctive tower within the Arena365 was created. During the Championships, its primary role was to serve as a media and organizational hub: competition management, timekeeping, announcers, judges, and both national and international media representatives were based here. From this elevated position, the entire competition area could be perfectly monitored and coordinated.

Architecturally, the World Championship Tower blends traditional Alpine design with modern timber craftsmanship. Its structure was inspired by classic hunting towers and the gable constructions of historic farmhouses in the region. The result is a building that was functional for elite sports while leaving a lasting cultural and scenic mark. After the Championships, the tower was deliberately preserved – as a visible symbol of Seefeld’s close connection to Nordic skiing and as a new viewing platform for guests and locals alike.
