You can find “Stoanmandl“ (stone cairns) all over the Tyrolean mountains, but they are particularly plentiful along the shingle banks of the Isar river in Hinterautal by Scharnitz. The small stones and broken rock fragments are just too tempting for many hikers, who happily indulge themselves by building as high and as stable a tower as possible. The cairns then stand proudly, like a little alpine welcome committee, for the next hikers who come along. But be careful: if you knock over someone else‘s cairn, you are expected to replace it with another one!
