In the Footsteps of the Dinosaurs - Geological Hiking Tour in the Oil Shale Region
Geological Adventure Tour - ideal for nature and geology enthusiasts, families (children aged 10 and up), and anyone who wants to experience Earth’s history directly in the field.
This varied hike leads through one of the most exciting geological landscapes in the region - the oil shale area. Along the way, you can discover rocks that formed millions of years ago from fine sediments at the bottom of a prehistoric sea. The so-called oil shale contains organic substances from dead algae and microorganisms and is therefore considered a special sedimentary rock with an energy-rich past.
During the tour, you will learn how these layers formed over millions of years and what role they play in Earth’s history. Several outcrops along the route allow for observation of typical dark, thinly layered oil shale deposits. With a bit of luck, fossils can also be discovered - such as plant remains or traces of early marine organisms. The hike not only offers geological insights but also impressive landscapes: steep rock formations, forested slopes, and wide views over the valley. On-site information explains the formation of the rocks, past extraction,
