Kapelle in den Öfen

Town:

An der Straße ins Gaistal, 6105 Leutasch

Chapels

The chapel in the Öfen was first built shortly before 1800 and is dedicated to St. Joseph. Unlike all other Leutasch chapels, the small, open St. Joseph's Chapel in the Öfen does not belong to any hamlet. Its name, St. Joseph's Chapel in the Öfen, also gives insight into its geologically interesting location: In the Öfen means on the way to Gaistal, as the Ache has carved oven-like cavities into the conglomerate rock of the gorge.

In 1959, the chapel in the Öfen was at the mercy of the nearly unstoppable force of water: After several days of continuous rain, the flood washed away the chapel and the road, which were slightly above street level. The Ache spread throughout the entire gorge, leaving no way to Gaistal. After the flood, not only the road but also the chapel on the opposite bank was rebuilt.

On St. Joseph's Day, the Tyrolean national holiday on March 19, a rosary is prayed in the chapel every year.

Above St. Joseph's Chapel, one can also find a crucifixion group and an old plaque with the legend of St. Martin. Unfortunately, nothing is known about their history and origin.
