Crystal clear water, pristine river landscapes, and an alpine mountain backdrop: In the Karwendel Nature Park, you can experience wild waters from a unique perspective – smoothly gliding in a kayak or action-packed in a raft. Exploring a mountain river directly from the water is a special treat.

Alpine Wild River Landscapes in the Karwendel

In the Karwendel Nature Park, there are two of the last largely untouched alpine wild river landscapes, the Upper Isar and the Rißbach. Gravel banks, side arms, and the natural dynamics of the rivers characterize this sensitive natural area.

These river landscapes provide habitats for threatened animal and plant species, such as the river bank runner or the gravel bank grasshopper, and are among the last possible refuges for these species in the Alpine region.

Good to know

Access: The entry point in Hinterautal cannot be reached by private car. Access is available on foot or by bicycle. From June 1 to October 15, a shuttle service including boat transport with the Scharnitz Karwendeltaxis is available to Hinterautal (Taxi Mair: +43 5213 5363 · Taxi Ramona: +43 5213 5541).
Entry & Exit: Please use exclusively the designated entry and exit points, which are marked on the regional flyer and on the signs on site.
No Stops on the gravel and shingle banks – they are important breeding grounds for endangered bird species.
Protected Times: Gravel banks may not be entered from March 15 to August 10.

The Isar is one of the most famous wild rivers in the Alpine region. Its turquoise waters, wide gravel banks, and the mountain scenery of the Karwendel make every tour an intense nature experience.
