Pia Fries “tausend : einerlei“ exhibition at KiS – Kunst in Seefeld (Art in Seefeld)
The latest exhibition – free admission – in the old fire station in Seefeld is by an artist with an unmistakable style, who nonetheless still likes to explore new artistic terrain with each new cycle. Pia Fries, a master student of Gerhard Richter, says of herself: “I like to learn from and be surprised by a picture.“ Colours, forms and empty spaces all come together during the creative process and she takes what appears as a starting point for a new vision and sees what emerges as a result.
Fries’ inspiration for the 2021 cycle “tausend : einerlei“ came from a picture album about Chinese bamboo paper production. The pages were removed from the album and then painted and printed over so that the figurative elements remained in the background, yet still appeared on the montage – “the original and the new by osmosis“.
In 2005, a copy of Maria Sibylla Merian‘s “Raupenbuch“ was the starting point for the cycle entitled “schwarze blumen“ (black flowers). As a naturalist and artist, Merian was fascinated by the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies and Pia Fries follows up this idea
