Press release, March 2020
SAAC Camps

SAAC is racing full speed into summer.
Risk in the mountains can never be eliminated, should never be pushed aside, but can be optimized with the right knowledge and the right equipment. The crucial means to raise this awareness: the two-day SAAC BIKE and CLIMB Camps. This time, registration for the free camps starts on March 15, 2020.
Overview of SAAC BIKE and CLIMB Camps
In a fun and understandable way, the free SAAC BIKE and CLIMB Camps convey know-how – completely without a raised finger. The topics include safety aspects, techniques, equipment, and materials, both in theory and practice. Behavior in emergency situations will also be covered. The courses, led by certified mountain guides and bike instructors, last two days. The number of participants per camp is limited to 32 people (4 groups with a maximum of 8 people each). Anyone aged 14 and above can participate.
NEW: Camp registration starts on March 15, 2020
The sought-after spots will be allocated starting from the camp registration date on March 15. Participation is free of charge, just like with the SAAC Basic Camps in winter. Any costs for a mountain railway ticket or shuttle service will be informed to participants directly upon registration. Here’s the link to register: www.saac.at
Requirements for participation
For the BIKE Camps, some biking experience and fitness are necessary – participants should be able to handle 500 meters of elevation gain in one day. Furthermore, a full-suspension bike with good tires (2.25 inches or wider), well-maintained disc brakes, and a sturdy half-shell helmet are required. With prior registration through the registration tool, elbow, knee, and shin guards can be borrowed from SAAC for free.
For the CLIMB Basic Camps, the following requirements apply: sports climbing ability of at least UIAA grade IV to V (secure holding of a fall and sufficient fitness) or, for the via ferrata camps, sufficient fitness and sure-footedness. Gear from partner Skylotec (except climbing shoes) can also be borrowed upon request.
About SAAC – The Original
The Association for Information on Alpine Hazards was founded in 1998/99 in Innsbruck after a tragic accident on the Nordkette. The goal of SAAC is to educate people about hazards, to sharpen their awareness of risk in the mountains, and to provide them with the mental and physical tools with which to optimize risk. In addition to SAAC Winter Camps, SAAC CLIMB Camps have been offered since summer 2011, and SAAC BIKE Camps have been available since summer 2013. In numbers: Over the last 20 years, more than 600 free SAAC Camps have been held with more than 26,000 participants and over 3,800 mountain guide days.
SAAC has been generously supported for 20 years by mountain railways, tourism associations, sponsors, and – from the very beginning – by the state of Tyrol, all of whom make a valuable contribution to ensure that the camps can be offered free of charge. Continuity and quality, as well as the commitment to permanent development at all levels, form the basis of SAAC's sustainable success. Further information: www.saac.at
