Hikers and climbers will enjoy over 650 kilometers of hiking trails and more than 60 huts. Cyclists have countless e-bike routes through cool forests and over sunny meadows. Still not enough action? The newly built family-friendly bike park at the Leutascher Katzenkopf pumps plenty of adrenaline into your veins, while the equally new Seefeld peak via ferrata lets you leave everyday life behind in the valley.

New diversity in Austria's largest nature park.
The Karwendel Nature Park encompasses almost the entire Karwendel massif and was expanded in January 2022 to include the already existing Arnspitze nature reserve in the municipality of Leutasch. This also makes Leutasch a nature park community, further supporting the preservation of the valley's unspoiled nature and agricultural identity, which according to Mayor Georgios Chrysochoidis is important to maintain for the future.

With an area of 739 km², the Karwendel Nature Park is not only Tyrol's largest protected area but also the largest nature park in all of Austria. It has an above-average proportion of natural habitats such as primeval forests and wild rivers, hosting a significant number of species of animals and plants that are important throughout Europe, such as golden eagles, white-backed woodpeckers, and lady's slippers.

Scharnitz is the ideal starting point for hikers, climbers, bikers, and nature lovers. Four valleys – Karwendel Valley, Hinterautal, Gleirschtal, and Gießenbachtal – and now also the impressive Arnspitz group are inviting explorers.

The Isar: A true Tyrolean.
Back to the source, where it all begins. Where the spring arises. Few feelings can be as genuine and primal as this. Especially when it's the Isar, which springs at 1,162 m in Hinterautal near Scharnitz. Bavaria's most popular river is indeed a true Tyrolean! With an e-bike or gravel bike, you can follow its blue waters beautifully from Scharnitz about 15 km to its source.

It can take decades for melting water or raindrops to carve their way through the rock. Along the way, the water collects many valuable minerals and trace elements before bubbling back to the surface in the Karwendel Nature Park. Ice-cold and crystal clear, the water springs from several sources. The water droplets then take three days on their journey to the Black Sea – but not before the Isar has learned to flow in Tyrolean dialect in its first kilometers.

A quiet insider tip: Wildmoos.
Silent beauty and unspoiled nature define the Wildmoos landscape protection area. An insider tip for those seeking tranquility, enjoyment, and nature enthusiasts. Located in the middle of the region and beautifully accessible from the three towns of Seefeld, Leutasch, and Mösern, one encounters plenty of nature and very few people on the winding paths with hardly any elevation changes. From the highest point, the Brunschkopf, you can see the entire Seefeld Plateau. Numerous power places, oases of tranquility, and cozy huts line the forests and extraordinary waters: where one of Tyrol's warmest swimming lakes sparkles between ancient trees near Mösern, one might need a bit more luck at the Wildmoos and Lotten lakes. These two aperiodic natural phenomena appear and disappear like magic during the snowmelt in spring.
