Not far from Scharnitz, the northern foothill of the Region Seefeld, is situated at the Bavarian border, behind it Mittenwald and a bit further in the woods two unforgettable refreshments: Lake Lautersee and Lake Ferchensee.
From the Scharnitz Nature Park Information Center, you can reach the two mountain lakes wither witn an enjoyable (e-)bike ride or an relaxing hike. Of course, you can also travel comfortably and barrieer free with the regional bus to Mittenwald. During the summer months you can use the bus directly to the Lake Lautersee, in winter by a romantic carriage drive.
As first of the two natural bathing lakes, just 5 kilometers from Mittenwald, you will reach the Lake Lautersee. The path is beautiful, leads picturesquely through the Laintal, a short steep section to the Mariengrotte and reaches at the top of the little forest chapel "Maria Königin" with "Lüftmalerei" and Lake Lautersee. Especially in the early morning houres , when nearly nobody walks here, the green colors of the meadows and forests are impressively reflected in the crystal clear mountain water. During the walk around the lake you can enjoy a break and freshly caught fish in one of the three idyllic inns, while children can enjoy the "bathing beach", diving platform, the jetty and a waterslide. Even during rain, the atmosphere at the lake is picturesque, a good book and outside the November fog, in winter the deep snowy mountain landscape sparkle beautiful.
Troll flowers and gentians bloom along the path to the neighboring Lake Ferchensee, which can only be reached via a traffic free forest path. Fawns play on the shore in summer; they live not far away on the Scheibenalm. Carps circle in the reeds and among the water lilies. The white sandy beach on the north side is unusally excotic: at small bathing spots where the mighty Wetterstein walls are reflected in the water, you can dive into the Alps with a pike jump. The impressive natural scenery was carved into the landscape by the last ice age. On a romantic winter walk the rugged limestone cliffs seems to be almost majestic. The cozy Ferchensee inn has small delicacies and refreshments ready for you all year round.
If you are looking for a litte more variety on the way back to Scharnitz, you can also go on a bike tour around the Kranzberg, admire the ruins of the medieval alpine fortress Porta Claudia, climb throught the rocks at the Sonnenplatten climbing garden or go on an adventure on the playground near the Scharnitz Nature Park Information Center.
