Chapels in Leutasch

This is how the Leutasch Valley presents itself. The numbers are impressive, especially considering that at the time most of the chapels were built, the valley had fewer than 1,000 inhabitants.

The main reason there are so many chapels in our valley, reflecting a deeply lived popular piety, is the size and spread of the community over more than 20 kilometers. The long distances from the scattered settlements to the main churches were often the reason for building a chapel. These chapels were not only places of prayer but also served as community “meeting points” on which people relied.

Chapel construction was often prompted by recovered illnesses, survived disasters, returns from war or captivity, and even fulfilled love or the blessing of children.

Each chapel thus carries its own story, along with its own saints and patrons.

LEUTASCH CHAPEL ADVENT

Programme 2026

Dear people of Leutasch, locals and guests,
we warmly invite you to join us after the chapel hikes for a cosy get-together in our local inns. Sitting together and enjoying a good “Hoangartn” — a relaxed chat in good company — is simply part of the pre-Christmas season and adds to the very special Advent magic in Leutasch.

Take a little time, because:
Advent in Leutasch does me good!

Our Thanks
A heartfelt thank you to all innkeepers who open their restaurants especially early for us and treat visitors to delicious specialities after the hikes.
We would also like to thank Leutasch Mountain Rescue, as well as the Oberleutasch and Unterleutasch fire brigades, who ensure the safety of all participants during the hikes.
