Let yourself be put in the right Christmas spirit this afternoon.
The custom of "Anklöpfeln" is an Alpine Advent tradition, particularly practiced in Tyrol, Salzburg, and parts of Bavaria. Groups – often dressed as shepherds, angels, or wise men – go from house to house before Christmas. They sing old shepherd songs or Christmas carols, narrate the biblical story of the search for lodging, and announce the impending birth of Christ.
Typical for the "Anklöpfeln" is:
The "knocking" on doors, which gives the custom its name.
A calm, contemplative atmosphere, often with lanterns and in traditional costumes.
No loud spectacle – in contrast to Krampus or St. Nicholas parades, knock knocking is a quiet, reverent custom.
The custom is often associated with a charitable purpose – the singers often collect donations for charitable causes.
"Anklöpfeln" is considered intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO in Austria and represents a lived folk culture during the Advent season.
