CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING ON TYROL'S HIGH PLATEAU

World-Class Cross-Country Skiing in the Alps

Cross-country skiing is both relaxing and exciting, and is open to everyone, regardless of age and fitness level. Whether step by step or gliding smoothly, everyone can find their flow on Tyrol's high plateau. Here, nature and trails simply and safely begin right at your doorstep.

The snow crunches, the cross-country skis glide gently, the cold tickles the nose, and although you've just left the town center a few minutes ago, you've already immersed yourself in the shimmer of the snow-covered fields and the silence of the winter forests of the Seefeld region. Only occasionally do you hear a soft "plop" when a branch frees itself from its snow burden. Stripped of all hectic impressions, you can almost smell the snow—a mix of cold, crystal-clear air, and the scent of pine.

Healthy and sustainable

These three elements and the movement in nature make cross-country skiing so healthy. "The stimulating climate improves immune defense, the cardiovascular system, and lungs are trained," confirms Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Schobersberger, sports and altitude medicine specialist at Tirol Kliniken. The risk of injury is minimal and it strengthens many large and small muscle groups. On the trails, coordination and balance are also trained. The even movement in bright winter light is also good for the mood. And on top of that, the sport is sustainable: it does not require elaborate infrastructure; ecological guilt is also unnecessary.

Just start running

245 kilometers of cross-country ski trails for all levels are waiting to be discovered, without a long journey or elaborate equipment. Just put on your cross-country skis and don’t forget your hat, gloves, ski poles, and off you go, gliding one push after another into unspoiled nature and the magic of winter. The trails, whether groomed for classic skiing or skating, gently wind their way over the valley meadows, and you can enjoy running wide loops in the sun. Many of the trails on Tyrol’s high plateau start directly in the village centers, while the others are conveniently accessible by local bus. No need to search for parking or stand in line, the starting time is maximally flexible and depends solely on personal preferences: Turn around one more time or thoroughly enjoy the breakfast buffet – at any time!

Three trail tips

Wild moss

Especially recommended is the high trail in Wildmoos, which ranges from easy to challenging through gentle forests and sunny clearings. The next cozy hut where you can recharge your energy is certainly not far away. You can easily reach Wildmoos with the Wildmoos bus from Seefeld (included in the cross-country ski pass), by the Katzenkopf lift from Leutasch (also included in the cross-country ski pass), by car from Mösern, sporting from Seefeld via the World Cup trails, or via the trail in Neuleutasch. No matter which way you choose, cross-country skiing enjoyment is guaranteed in Wildmoos.

Night trail

The trail A1 starts right by the Seekirchl, outside of Seefeld's vibrant pedestrian zone. It is an easy trail that is ideal for beginners and is groomed for both techniques (Classic/Skating). It is three kilometers long and can be combined with more challenging trails during the day. Promptly at 5:00 PM, from Monday to Friday, the lights come on. Cross-country skiers can then expect a truly special experience, as the snow crunches under their skis and the night air awakens the spirit. The characteristic silhouette of the Seekirchl shines in the light, and above the Olympic swimming pool, promising steam rises.

Ski touring trail

There is also a great cross-country skiing offer in the region for sports enthusiasts in wheelchairs. For example, the A5 trail, which starts at the large Rödlach parking lot in Moos/Leutasch (accessible toilets available) and leads across open fields to the hamlets of Ostbach and Platzl, before gently ascending back to the starting point. This trail is particularly popular among beginner cross-country skiers as it is wide-groomed and offers plenty of sunshine and scenic enjoyment. The connecting trail A6 is also suitable for sledding; however, one has to navigate a underpass and at the Alpenbad, there awaits a somewhat challenging ascent and a descent.
