NOTE: Between Gries am Brenner and the Brennerpass, the original route of the Via Romea is impassable for the foreseeable future. It is recommended not to use the path between Gries and Brennerpass. Due to high traffic volumes along the federal highway (Bundesbrennerstraße), walking this section is dangerous and not without risk.
It is recommended to take the train from the St. Jodok stop to the Brennerpass.
Those who cannot or do not wish to take the train can take the route via the Sattelbergalm. This requires good physical condition and sure-footedness.

The starting point is the parish church of Mariä Himmelfahrt in the north of Matrei. We walk south along the railway tracks. Cross the Sill river, turn left and pass under the railway tracks to the left before the station. Then immediately turn right again to cross the Sill once more at the level of the station building. We follow the river to the right, keeping it on our right-hand side. At the level of the playground, we cross the river to the right again and then follow the road "Statz" straight ahead across the junction to the left. We continue with the railway line on our right.
