In the most popular winter hiking region of the Alps

Enjoyable winter hiking on Tyrol's high plateau

More and more active holidaymakers are discovering winter hiking as a relaxed alternative to skiing and other winter sports. The Seefeld region was one of the first to prepare and mark trails specifically to create a gentle and nature-oriented holiday offering. It’s no wonder, as the vast and impressive high plateau provides ideal conditions for this. The winter hiking circuit Seefeld-Mösern Wildmoos has even been awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal. With the new Seefeld high plateau winter long-distance hike and its five star-shaped stages, the tourism association elevates sustainable winter sports to a new level and further strengthens its position as a top winter hiking destination.

Health booster for everyone

Winter hiking is booming for good reason. Anyone can just get started, regardless of age and physical fitness. Expensive equipment? Not necessary! Warm functional clothing, sturdy footwear, a backpack, and a snack – and off you go. Winter hiking also involves hardly any alpine dangers and has a low risk of injury compared to skiing or snowboarding. And the best part: Winter hiking is a real health booster! It gets body and mind moving, strengthens the immune system, and lifts the mood. The fresh winter air clears the airways, the sunlight boosts spirits, and grants new energy – especially beneficial during the darker months. The steady movement in nature helps to reduce stress and brings body and mind into balance. It’s no wonder that more and more people are drawn to Seefeld to show the winter blues the cold shoulder.

An (excellent) milestone in the long tradition of winter hiking.

The winter hiking route Seefeld-Mösern-Wildmoos has recently been awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal – a special honor that officially confirms the high quality of the hiking trails in Seefeld. The award is not only a symbol of well-maintained and scenically impressive paths but also a quality seal for safety, orientation, and experience value. The renowned certification underscores that the region is not only a pioneer in the area of gentle winter tourism but also regarded as one of the leading winter hiking destinations in Austria. This is because winter hiking has a long tradition in the Seefeld region. More specifically, this nature-oriented activity has played an important role for over 60 years. The Seefeld region was one of the first to prepare and mark trails specifically, thereby focusing on a gentle and nature-oriented holiday offer. It’s no wonder, as the extensive and scenically impressive high plateau offers the best conditions for this. The Tyroleans regularly prepare 142 kilometers of the finest winter hiking trails between Leutasch, Mösern, Reith, Scharnitz, and Seefeld.

Winter hiking redefined: The Seefeld High Plateau winter hiking tour

With the new Seefelder Hochplateau Winterweitwanderung, the Seefeld region writes the next chapter in sustainable winter tourism. Starting this winter, the new multi-day tour – accompanied by a booklet and app – invites you to nature-based adventures. Five star-shaped routes start and end in Seefeld, leading past the scenic highlights of the five municipalities Leutasch, Mösern, Reith, Scharnitz, and Seefeld, including the peace bell in Mösern, the Cäcilia chapel, or the idyllic Weidachsee, where even ice fishing is possible. For a delightful break, there are cozy resting spots along the routes. Depending on the weather, mood, and preference, the stages can be shortened, extended, or combined to experience winter in all its facets – sometimes calm and contemplative, sometimes active and adventurous. The starting points of the stages are accessible both on foot and by public transport, keeping the ecological footprint as small as possible. No interference with nature, no artificial snowmaking. The concept operates without elaborate infrastructure, combining nature experiences with sustainability while also offering maximum flexibility for hikers. But also a break from everyday life in snowy silence. A completely decelerated way to experience winter, far away from the hustle and bustle of ski resorts.

Oldie but Goldie: Tyrol's first long-distance winter hiking trail

As early as 2018, the Seefeld area revolutionized gentle winter tourism: On Tyrol's 1st Long-Distance Winter Hiking Trail, hikers immerse themselves in the magical tranquility of the region over four stages, accompanied by a comfortable luggage service that makes the experience particularly relaxing. The route mostly leads through the idyllic Leutaschtal with its almost meditative atmosphere - a detour to the Peace Bell in Mösern is of course a must. At the latest, when the veil of fog lifts and the clear mountain air reveals the view of the surrounding peaks, every step becomes an experience. It is impossible to escape the magic of winter silence. One can feel the special charm of the region and the allure of this sport with all senses.
