Scharnitz in Summer

In summer, Scharnitz is often called the "Gateway to the Karwendel" – with an impressive 739 km² of natural diversity, the largest nature park in Austria opens up immediately after the Bavarian border.

From the "base camp" Nature Park Visitor Center Scharnitz, four cool valleys are available for hiking, biking, and refreshing: the eponymous Karwendel Valley, the Hinterautal with the famous Isar springs, the Gleirschtal with its spectacular gorge, and the tranquil Eppzirltal. Along the way, numerous alpine pastures and huts line the comfortable biking and hiking trails, making it easy to break even challenging (bike & hike) adventures into pleasant stages: for example, to the Kastenalm and up to Halleranger, via Gießenbach to the tranquil area of Eppzirl, or straight to Birkkarspitze – at 2,749 meters, the highest peak in the Karwendel.
