Memorials

On the outskirts of Leithen towards Reith, there is a prominent pillar known locally as the "Thick Tower." It features depictions of the Sorrowful Mother of God, the Crucifixion of Christ, as well as various plague saints.

The pillar serves as a reminder of the hardships during the Thirty Years' War when passing troops brought the plague to the region. For several years, the epidemic claimed numerous victims and had a lasting impact on the lives of the people.

Contrary to some traditions, however, the men and women depicted on the pillar do not represent the survivors of Leithen. In the church memorial book, there is the following entry: "On October 6, 1637, the memorial pillar, which the honorable and strict Nikolaus Haller from Innsbruck vowed to dedicate to the plague saints in times of plague, was erected on the way to Scharnitz."
