Gorges & ravines

Anyone who knows the legendary Karwendelmarsch is of course also familiar with the spectacular Karwendel Gorge. It is located near the small Birzlkapelle directly in the eponymous Karwendel Valley above Scharnitz and can even be comfortably reached as part of an extended walk. The scenic ascent rewards you along the way with spectacular views over the countless peaks and side valleys of Austria's largest nature park.

Of course, the gorge can also be admired outside the heroic Karwendel crossing over 52 kilometers: An idyllic circular hike leads from the Infozentrum-Naturpark Scharnitz over the Birzlkapelle to the Karwendel Bridge. Directly below, the turquoise Karwendelbach thunders through the eternal rock, carving the impressive gorge into the porous Wetterstein limestone. Along adventurous rock formations, roaring waterfalls, and untouched natural beauty, the gorge hike takes you back, and on the way back, there’s always a small detour to the Scharnitzer Alm.

Every Monday, you can also hike through the Karwendel Gorge with a certified nature park guide and experience the panoramic tour with fascinating expertise, exciting details, and special secrets. Registration can be done through our experience shop or directly at the information offices.
