The Seekirchl - also Heiligkreuzkirche - is probably the most famous landmark of Seefeld. Under the regency of Archduke Leopold V, construction began in 1629, but the elaborate sacral building was not completed until 1666, a full 37 years later. Originally, the baroque Seekirchl stood in the middle of the cross lake artificially created by Duke Sigismund the Coin Rich in the 15th century, which, however, was drained about 300 years later in 1808.
Particularly noteworthy is the octagonal ground plan of the central building, which is rare in Tyrol, with its column-free dome and enclosed bell tower - realised by court architect Christoph Gumpp the Younger. To this day, the picturesque Votivkirche in Kirchwald is a historic place of pilgrimage (a miraculous late Gothic crucifix) and probably the most popular postcard and photo motif in the region.
