Source of the Isar River in the Karwendel Nature Park
The origin of the Isar – one of the most well-known rivers in Bavaria – springs from the Tiroler Hinterautal near Scharnitz, right in the middle of the Karwendel Nature Park at an altitude of 1,162 meters. The clear spring water emerges from three springs there – in a quiet, nature-connected place at the foot of impressive Karwendel peaks. The locals affectionately call this place "By the Rivers".
Here begins a journey that is as long as it is turbulent, as eventful as it is exciting: From its origin in Tyrol to its mouth in the Black Sea takes about 30 days – the journey of each individual water droplet lasts about 30 hours from the spring area to the Danube. The first approximately 15 kilometers of its journey, the Isar learns 'Tyrolean' before it flows into Bavaria via Scharnitz.
The spring water takes up to 15 years to seep through the rock layers from rain or snow and to become enriched with valuable minerals. After just a few meters, the streams unite into a strong brook – the young Isar – which winds through the idyllic Hinterautal.
The hike or bike tour to the Isar origin is one of the most popular nature experiences in the Karwendel Nature Park. Whether on foot or by mountain bike – the route impresses with alpine scenery, clear water, and untouched tranquility. A short distance further, the original Kastenalm invites you to a snack, surrounded by magnificent maple trees.

Important Notes
- The path to the source of the Isar is not technically demanding, but very long, so a basic level of fitness and endurance are prerequisites for the tours.
- The source of the Isar is a protected natural area. Please do not leave any litter and respect the flora and fauna.
- We recommend using public transport to reach the Scharnitz train station. Your guest card serves as a ticket for all public bus connections in the region, including train rides between Seefeld and Scharnitz.
- From the Scharnitz train station, it is only a 10-minute walk to the starting point at the Nature Park Information Center Scharnitz.

Arrival & Mobility
Public travel to Scharnitz
Arrival by bus and train from Innsbruck (here to Scotty) or from Germany (here to DB).
From the Scharnitz train station, it is only a 10-minute walk to the starting point at the Nature Park Information Center Scharnitz.
Good to know: The guest card serves as a ticket for all public bus connections in the region during your stay. Additionally, the train ride between Seefeld and Scharnitz is included.
Parking options
For hikers, we recommend the large Parking Lot P2 "Karwendel Parking Lot Länd", which is located directly at the Nature Park Info Center Scharnitz.
For cyclists, the Parking Lots P1 "Riedboden" (when arriving from Munich) and P4 "Mühlberg" (when arriving from Innsbruck) are available. From there, the Nature Park Info Center can be reached in about 5 minutes by bike.
