Seefeld 2019: Exciting facts about the FIS Nordic Ski World Championships
The 52nd FIS Nordic Ski World Championships will take place in Seefeld from February 19 to March 3, 2019. The attention of the entire Nordic world will be focused on Seefeld as the best athletes compete for the medals. Think you know everything about the World Championships? 60 nations – From Bermuda to Lebanon
The best athletes from 60 nations will be at the World Championship 2019 in Seefeld and will compete for the titles of world champion and world championess. Those who believe that Nordic sports only exist in countries like Austria, Scandinavia, the USA, and the like are quite wrong! At the World Championships in Seefeld 2019, athletes from countries like Madagascar, Thailand, Bermuda, and Lebanon will also be competing for medals. Athletes from Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico will also be traveling there.
22 competitions and 129 medals
In proud 22 competitions the world elite will compete in the three disciplines of cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and Nordic combined. A total of 129 medals will be awarded at the FIS Nordic Ski World Championship 2019.
137 grams
About the medal: The medal weighs exactly 137 grams, which the lucky world champions are allowed to wear around their necks. The design of the medal is based on a snowflake, and the ribbon is colored in the colors of the five continents. On the back, the event name, hosting location, and year are engraved. The medal was designed by the famous Swiss artist Rolf Diggelmann. Proudly 67 years, since 1952, the medal will already be in use at the FIS World Championships 2019. The facts surrounding the medal are thus clarified - the only remaining question is which athletes will be able to take it home in 2019!
200.00 spectators
Such a large number of spectators are expected on-site during the World Cup in Seefeld and Innsbruck, who will cheer on the athletes on the courses and from the numerous spectator stands.
Of course, you can also cheer in front of the television: Approximately 900 hours of live broadcasting are expected during the World Cup. This means that approximately 200 million people around the world will be following the events.
138 meters
This is the jump record at Bergisel and thus the longest distance that has ever been jumped on the ski jump in Innsbruck. It will be exciting to see if this record will be broken during the 2019 World Championships! By the way: The length of the jump skis depends on the body mass index of the athlete. The heavier the athlete, the longer the skis.
5500 calories
A long-distance runner will run a total of 90 km (without qualifying races). For comparison: This is exactly the same length as the Vasaloppet in Sweden, the most popular cross-country skiing race. In doing so, they burn approximately a whopping 5,500 kilocalories. Or in other words: 30 Kaspressknödel or 9 portions of Kaiserschmarrn. Enjoy your meal.
650 tons
Pretty heavy: The steel structures of the grandstands for the World Championship weigh a total of 650 tons. In total, 10,032 spectators will find a place in the stands. The construction of the grandstands takes a total of 8 weeks. The media grandstand – a structure over 3 floors including various commentator booths – the video walls with oversized screens, and the stream crossing for the VIP grandstand present particular challenges.
1,200 liters of soup, 800 kg of pasta
To ensure that athletes, coaches, and support staff do not run out of energy during the World Championship, ample provisions are available: 6,000 energy bars, 1,200 liters of soup, 800 kg of pasta, 200 kg of rice, and 800 kg of vegetables will be provided over the 12 days of the championship. Proteins are also well represented: A total of 960 kg of meat (mostly chicken, as well as beef and pork) will be served. 5,000 apples and bananas will provide the necessary vitamins.
600 Freiwillige
A large event like the FIS Nordic Ski World Championships Seefeld 2019 cannot take place without the help of numerous volunteers. A total of 600 volunteers – including 60 at Bergisel in Innsbruck – will be actively involved during the World Championships. They can choose from 30 exciting areas to work in, such as the Race Office, TV coordination, media and press, logistics and setup, doping control, and many more!
