The probably smallest ski lift in the world
Sometimes it’s the little things that bring us the greatest joy. Even if you don’t immediately think of skiing – in Seefeld, this saying is truer than you might think. Here, you can find what is probably the smallest ski lift in the world! Nestled in the Tyrolean mountains, two "micro-ski areas" connect to create a special place that reminds us of past (ski) days.
As a passionate skier, I regularly enjoy the double-digit kilometers of slopes and high-tech lifts of the Alps, but Seefeld will always be the place where it all began for me. The first turns, the first time "Pizza & fries", and also the first falls I got to experience here. Depending on my mood, I would choose one side of the "Seefeld ski hill" with mom and dad, and there I was on the skis. The two small ski areas named Birkenlift and Geigenbügel are located right in the middle of Seefeld and were always super easy for us to reach. When I pass by this hill today, where it all began, everything seems just like it was back then. On both sides, children are playing and having the time of their lives, the drag lifts and magic carpets are doing their job, and the parents observe the scene from a safe distance. It feels to me as if time has literally frozen. But my feeling is misleading! Something truly beautiful has happened in my absence.
A wedding without church bells
In December 2022, there was a big wedding on my ski learning hill. And all this without a wedding speaker or church bells! The two ski resorts, which have shared the same hill their entire lives, entered into a joint union and have since merged to become the smallest ski lift in the world. A lovely story that also appeals to aspiring ski stars and snowboarding artists. Three tow lifts, six conveyor belts, a cable car, and even a carousel provide plenty of variety when learning parallel turns and impressing the parents. These parents enjoy the manageability, safety, and warm, welcoming atmosphere right in the village during their offspring's first attempts at skiing.
The one true hip swing.
The feel-good factor also applies to the many eager adult learners who mingle with the children's groups here. Since you don't find such ideal learning conditions everywhere, the holiday in Seefeld often includes practicing hip swings with boards under your feet instead of at après-ski in the mountain hut. If it gets too boring on one side, you can take the conveyor belt to the other side of the hill and the adventure begins anew. Even though it may not shine with kilometers of slopes or 25 different lifts, Birkenlift and Geigenbühel offer everything that ski beginners need: flat slopes, good snow conditions, and above all, plenty of sunshine. And that's right in the middle of the village! The Geigenbühel is within walking distance from many accommodations – it couldn't be more convenient.
Came for the slopes, stayed for the atmosphere.
If you're learning to ski here, you won't just love the slopes, but also the atmosphere. For the little ones, there's a dedicated lift pass and the professional support of the local ski instructors – and so that parents can enjoy a few turns on their own, there is loving childcare. And the lift staff? They greet friendly and help the little ones grasp the bar – just as it used to be. While the parents relax in the sun and reminisce, the kids take their first turns on the slopes. In Seefeld, it's not about higher, faster, further – it's about having a great time together. Whether on the ski hill, on the trail, or during winter hiking.
Just a stone's throw away
For everyone who has outgrown the children’s ski boots, it's time to take on new challenges. The family-friendly ski areas Gschwandtkopf, Rosshütte, and Katzenkopf are just a stone's throw away. The Seefeld region shows that it doesn’t always have to be about the big ski resorts. Sometimes it’s the small, charming places that give us the best experiences. So strap on your skis, let nostalgia take you away (like it does for me), and enjoy the smallest – and most charming – ski lift in the world.
