Amidst deep snow-covered forests, impressive snow walls, and rustic huts, you can wander through the alpine winter landscapes and find your inner self. We have compiled the most beautiful winter hiking trails for you!
Winter hiking: As beautiful as in summer - and yet completely different
If you like to lace up your hiking boots in the summer, you know the magic of hiking. You move through nature, enjoy impressive views, spend time with your loved ones, and as a reward, there’s a strengthening break at the alpine hut. You can experience all of that in winter too – perhaps even a little more beautifully, because nothing touches you more than the silence in a deeply snow-covered forest, disturbed only by the crunch of your own shoes. The best part about winter hiking: you don’t need the stamina required for cross-country skiing, no technique like with skiing, and no sled like… well, like with sledding. You just need your hiking boots, warm clothes, and – ideally – a hot tea in your backpack. Which winter hiking trails should you definitely not miss this winter? We have the best tips for you!
1. Wild Lake, Parish Hill & Seekirchl
A must for every winter visitor to the Seefeld region: This circular hike takes you to the most beautiful spots of the place. Starting at the idyllic Wildsee, enjoy the magnificent view from the Pfarrhügel and let yourself be enchanted by the iconic Seekirchl and the festively illuminated pedestrian zone. Perfect for anyone wanting to experience the winter atmosphere in Seefeld.
2. 100,000 Lights Path
The 100,000 Lights Path in Seefeld is a winter highlight that shines beautifully in the evenings from twilight until 10:00 PM. The circular hike leads through the festively illuminated pedestrian zone, past the Christmas tree and the Christmas market. Continuing on to the Pfarrhügel, where you have a great view of the Wildsee. The finale is the Seekirchl, which shines in the light – in front of which a large Advent wreath glows in the water.
3. Gaistalalm
On one side, the impressive north faces of the Hohe Munde, on the other side, the white sparkling Wetterstein Mountains, and in between, a deeply snow-covered winter hiking trail: the Gaistal in winter is a magical place. Those who have been there in summer know the beauty hidden under the snow. But even in the cold season, it is an excursion that one must absolutely undertake. The Gaistalalm is a warmly run hut full of tradition and invites you after a hike through the lonely valley to enjoy a hot chocolate and many other delicious dishes. The winter hiking trail W12 leads you through the sparkling mountain panorama to the Gaistalalm.
4. Ropferstub'm
This hike connects deeply snow-covered forests, impressive views, and a truly incomparable rest stop. You walk through the winter landscape on dreamlike paths until suddenly a breathtakingly beautiful view of the Inn Valley opens up. This can also be enjoyed from the Ropferstub’m. On very cold days, its rustic parlor and the warm oven invite you to enjoy a warm refreshment, while on mild winter days you can let the sun shine on your face on the sun terrace. The winter hiking trail W26 leads you from Mösern to the Ropferstub’m.
5th Peace Hiking Trail
The Peace Hiking Trail in Mösern is a reflective winter hike that not only moves the legs but also the spirit. The route leads past seven spiritual stations around the Möserer Lake all the way to the Peace Bell. Weighing 10,450 kilograms, the Peace Bell is among the largest free-standing bells in the Alpine region. Every day at 5 PM, it sends its message – the sound echoes across Tyrol’s high plateau and the Inn Valley, reminding us of the values of peace and friendship between the Alpine countries.
6. Meadow Path
The Leutasch Valley is simply a place whose magic is hard to put into words. You can feel it on the meadow path: it leads past charming, old farmhouses, white meadows, and through deep snow-covered winter forests. Here, you can truly enjoy the tranquility of winter. There are plenty of places to eat: particularly recommended is, for example, the beautiful Kühtaierhof.
7. Möserer Valley
Cross-country skiers know the Möser Valley and its dreamy trails. For those who prefer a more leisurely approach, there is the winter hiking trail, one of the most beautiful around Seefeld. Afterwards, you can enjoy a meal at the popular Sportalm or at Woods directly at the Seekirchl.
8. To the Imperial Rank
A tip for winter hikers: the Kaiserstand and its cozy rest bench are hidden above Reith and offer a dreamy tour. The winter forests are enchanting, and you often walk completely alone through the glittering landscape. With every meter you cover, the views become even more breathtaking. Tip: After the tour, you can recharge in the guesthouses in Reith. Especially good: The Gasthof Hirschen, the Hotel Reitherhof, and Bertas im Weissen Rössl. For on the go, you can take a thermos with hot tea to take a break on the bench and make yourself really cozy.
9. Leutasch Farm Shop Round
The Leutascher Hofladen-Runde is the perfect winter walk for pleasure seekers. The trail spans about 10 kilometers through the picturesque Leutasch Valley, passing by traditional farms that offer their regional products on-site. Here, you can not only taste creamy fresh cheese or fresh organic eggs, but also discover handmade products like pine pillows. An authentic winter experience for all who love rural life and regional delicacies.
10. Through the Cat Hole
The Cat Hole is a real insider tip among winter hiking trails. The path leads through a charming winter forest, where you can find a lot of peace away from everyday life. The refreshment option also makes everyone happy: at the Ropferstub’m, there is truly delicious Tyrolean cuisine and a rustic guest room where you like to linger longer. On the way back, you can also take a small detour to the Muggenmoosalm.
11th circular hike with three huts: Wildmoosalm, Lottenseehütte & Möserer Seestub’n
This beautiful winter hike is a must if you are looking for lonely winter landscapes and picturesque views. The loop hike extends eleven kilometers and without significant elevation gain through the deeply snow-covered forests around the Brunschkopf. Along the way, you will visit three huts: the Wildmoosalm, Lottenseehütte, and the Möserer Seestub’n. If you can't decide, it's best to stop by all of them – you can never have enough hot chocolate and apple strudel, especially on cold days, right?! By the way: you can also start from Seefeld, which makes the hike another beautiful half hour longer, or two kilometers through the winter forest.
