On Glowing Runners - The Most Beautiful Toboggan Runs of the Seefeld Region - Tyrol's High Plateau

The traditional sport of tobogganing is probably as old as we Tyroleans ourselves. In the past, wooden and horn sleds were often the only means of transport in steep terrain, but today winter tobogganing is once again gaining popularity as a versatile and cost-effective alternative on the slopes. In the Seefeld region, too, characterful natural toboggan runs offer many opportunities for enthusiasts and recreational athletes to experience the fun of sledding up close. There are plenty of good reasons for this; even challenging ascents are rewarded at the top with excellent huts and breathtaking panoramic views. Afterwards, varied descents await through picturesque mountain landscapes and deep snow-covered winter forests. We have searched for – and found – the most beautiful toboggan runs in the region.

Sled in Tyrolean: Rodl, Rutschblattl & Zipflbob

To go tobogganing properly, you need the right equipment, as every mountain sport also involves risks. Therefore, the basic equipment includes a helmet, gloves, and your favorite hot drink in an insulated bottle. True tobogganing specialists also like to bring a headlamp, snow chains (for boots during the ascent – not suitable for the descent), and ski goggles. The choice of the right toboggan then depends on your riding style and experience: on a practice slope, a small plastic plate (traditionally called a "Rutschblattl") is often enough, while with a grip handle, you can slide further down (traditionally a "Zipflbob"). Only with the classic Wooden Toboggan or the flat Racing Toboggan do you venture onto one of the beautiful natural toboggan runs in the region.

How to Toboggan

Healthy self-assessment provides security during the ups and downs, and respect and caution are naturally present on the way. The ascent takes place in an orderly fashion, like a line of geese, along the outer edge of the toboggan run, as reckless evasive maneuvers disrupt both descent and ascent. Also, the darkness is never a test of courage – where toboggan runs are unlit in the evening, one sets off early enough, descends on time, or, if necessary, turns back. You can practice the right handling and tobogganing technique effortlessly on the two clear toboggan slopes at the Seefelder Pfarrhügel. For all descents, the information offices in the Seefeld region and the current snow report provide prior information about the current snow conditions and any trail closures.

For connoisseurs: Lift comfort at Katzenkopf

The Toboggan Run at Katzenkopf is the only descent in the Seefeld region that makes the ascent easier via cable car. Toboggans can be rented at the valley station for the duration of the tobogganing fun if needed, the ascent and descent are family and child-friendly, and a stop at the Katzenkopf Hut is always a delicious recommendation.

Argument: Lift

Ascent: 40 minutes from the valley station or via lift

Descent: 2.5 kilometers with a 12% slope over 250 vertical meters

Difficulty: family and child-friendly

Night Tobogganing: Every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM

For Friends & Families: Hämmermoosalm

From the last parking lot in the picturesque Gaistal, almost all paths lead to the Hämmermoosalm. Depending on which one you choose, the ascent varies from leisurely to sporty and takes between 20 and 40 minutes through wild and romantic forest areas. At the rustic Hämmermoosalm, you may also encounter the harp player Albert; the ascent can also be completed by horse-drawn sleigh upon request.

Argument: Very easily accessible, delicious cuisine

Ascent: 20-40 minutes from the parking lot in Gaistal or via horse-drawn sleigh

Descent: two kilometers over 167 meters of elevation

Requirements: perfect for beginners and families

For gourmets: Rodelbahn Rauthhütte

The Naturrodelbahn Rauthhütte is one of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the Seefeld region. The ascent is steep, the descent fast, and the culinary offerings at the Rauthhütte are even recommended by the French gourmet guide Gault&Millau. For particularly sociable evenings, there is plenty of accommodation available at the top, and in the traditional stove room, pets are also welcome by the crackling fireplace.

Argument: recommended by Gault&Millau

Ascent: 80 minutes from the Rauthhütte parking lot in Moos

Descent: three kilometers over 420 meters of elevation

For self-sufficiency: Tips without a stopover

Even those looking for tranquility while tobogganing will find it in the Seefeld region: The toboggan run at Kreidegraben is an undiscovered gem, where it's rare to encounter other toboggan enthusiasts in Scharnitz. The toboggan run at Mühlberg in Scharnitz is also a true insider tip. Those seeking the challenge without companions will find it at the Hoher Sattel. At all these locations, you are alone with yourself and nature; even at the summit, self-caterers will find a peaceful "sunny spot" instead of a bustling hut atmosphere. After a hearty panoramic picnic, you can calmly sled back down into the valley. If you wish, you can either head back up again or indulge in a fantastic wellness facility in the Seefeld region on the way home.
