SUMMER

Karwendel March - the legend lives on!

The Karwendel March is the legendary event in the calendar of all hikers and mountain runners. Proudly, 2,500 participants come from all over the world to traverse the Karwendel Mountains from Scharnitz to Lake Achensee year after year. Within a very short time, the tickets sell out and the days until the event are counted with impatience. The Karwendel March is unique – and for many reasons!

Goosebumps pure: A unique atmosphere

One thing the Karwendelmarsch does particularly well is evoke strong emotions! From the beginning to the end, goosebumps are guaranteed. Something very special is the start: Early in the morning, when the sun is just slowly waking up, everyone is ready. Fatigue gives way to excitement – it’s about to start! Together, they count down and finally: The march begins! All hikers and runners spread out from the small village of Scharnitz into the Karwendel mountains – an unforgettable day lies ahead of them.

Overwhelming, diverse views

The route spans a total of 52 km or 35 km through the entire Karwendel mountain range. Starting from Scharnitz, it leads to the Karwendelhaus, the Falkenhütte, into the Eng, and over the Gramaialm to the Achensee. The path is diverse and absolutely impressive. It passes by rugged rock faces, lovely alpine meadows, bizarre peaks, and rustic huts. From dawn until the afternoon – the incomparable atmosphere in the mountains makes you forget your tired legs!

The good soul of the event: The helpers

Only through the numerous helpers does the Karwendelmarsch become what it is: they are the good souls of the event. Many of them have been involved from the very beginning. The many clubs, groups, and individual helpers especially look forward to the camaraderie on the mountain, the easy cooperation, and also to the "pleasant gatherings" after the work is done. Many participants come back year after year, and they notice this too: "You see many familiar faces!" Our helpers truly make the Karwendelmarsch a true legend!

I pack my hiking backpack and take with me: What you need for the Karwendelmarsch.

No question: The Karwendelmarsch is very well organized. Refreshment stations provide food and drinks, and first aid posts are ready for any emergencies. Nevertheless, when tackling such a demanding route, you should pack your backpack carefully. We have put together a small list of the 10 most important things for you:

1. Blister plasters: Just in case your shoes cause pain…! Blisters on your feet can abruptly end your march. A small first aid kit in your backpack is always useful. For emergencies, mountain rescue is available along the route for you.

2. Your mobile phone: By now, the mobile phone is already standard equipment. Thanks to smartphones, you can call for help in case of an emergency, take photos and videos, and make your friends in the valley envious.

3. Emergency app SOS-EU-Alp App: This app has been specifically developed for all alpine emergencies. It is free and can be easily and quickly installed on your phone.

4. A camera: In addition to your phone, you can capture the unforgettable day with a camera, ensuring you'll remember it for a long time to come!

5. Energy bars, cookies, bananas, etc.: Although the numerous refreshment stations provide delicious snacks for your well-being, it's good to have a few snacks of your own. That way, nobody ends up in a sugar low!

6. Water/drinks: Please feel free to bring a bottle that you can refill at the refreshment stations – this way, you'll be well taken care of, and our nature will be protected from unnecessary waste.

7. Rain jacket: Through various channels of the Karwendelmarsch, you will receive a detailed weather forecast shortly before the event. This way, you can equip yourself perfectly according to the weather.

8. Change shirt and a warmer layer: Sitting in the wind when you're sweaty is not pleasant. A change of shirt prevents cooling down and makes breaks enjoyable.

9. Sun protection: This naturally includes sunglasses, sunscreen, and a head covering. After all, nobody needs sunburn, sunstroke, or dazzled eyes!

10. Hiking poles: If you enjoy hiking with poles, you can certainly take them with you. They are especially a pleasant support going downhill.

Do you want to be part of it and experience the legend of the Karwendelmarsch up close? Then you need to act fast! Every year in December, registration opens and places are booked out within a few hours! On our website and our social media channels, we will keep you updated.
