Biking with Kids – the 5 Best Tours for the Whole Family
"Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bicycle." John F. Kennedy recognized the magic of cycling and couldn't have put it better into words. A magic that the whole family can also dive into. As a bike-loving mom, I can only confirm that. So let's go and hop on the saddle - with these 5 tours, the shared biking time with the family will become quality time, where play & fun won't be short!
1. Family Experience Trail
With children, the journey is always the destination. And on this journey, it's essential to discover everything that nature and the environment have to offer. On the Family Adventure Cycling Path, this is precisely what is possible. There's no shortage of variety along the cycle path, as it runs along the Leutascher Ache through the Leutaschtal – water fun is guaranteed!
Just half a kilometer after starting at the Weidachbrücke Parking Lot, you will reach the first highlight of the tour: the Adventure Playground. Climbing and play options excite the little ones, while mom and dad relax on the rotating sun benches. The direct access to the Leutascher Ache also provides the necessary dose of action – building dams and playing with water is the call of the day!
As soon as everyone is back on their bikes, you can roll comfortably to the newly constructed suspension bridge in Ahrn and watch the climbers at the Flämenwandl climbing garden. The journey continues to a well-deserved stop at the Gasthaus Brücke – children's playground, barefoot path, and a family photo spot included! What more could you need?
- Highlights: Adventure playground, suspension bridge, climbing garden Flämenwandl
- Places to eat: Gasthaus Brücke
2. Tillfussalm
THE MTB introductory tour for families! Although the tour features short ascents, downhill sections ensure plenty of necessary relaxation. The motto is simply to take it slow!
Along the turquoise blue Leutascher Ache, you cycle right into the Almenparadies Gaistal.
Upon arrival at the Tillfussalm, you can admire the old hunting lodge Hubertus (there used to be a tennis court here!), located above the alp, and dream back to a past era. Whether dums, Brettljause, or Kaiserschmarrn made from regional ingredients – the kitchen of the alp leaves nothing to be desired for both young and old.
Fully energized, you'll roll back down the valley. If you want to embark on a real mountain hut tour, you can take a detour on the way back to the Gaistalalm and make another culinary stop here – a playground and sandy area provide variety right at the doorstep! Once you return to the starting point, the family adventure is not over yet, as it's still time to head to the fresh-water place for playing and kneipp therapy!
- Highlights: Leutascher Ache, water playground & Kneipp facility Salzbach
- Dining options: Tillfussalm, Gaistalalm
3rd Connection Seefeld-Reith
This bike tour is much more than "just" a connection. A bee learning path, a lake for swimming & playing, playgrounds, and places to eat make this tour the ideal family bike tour. You can also decide whether to start in Seefeld or Reith (Note: depending on your starting point, the route goes uphill along the path to Wildsee (Reith-Seefeld) or downhill (Seefeld-Reith)) – and thus how you want to shape your day. Here are your must-sees along the tour:
Along the bee learning path on the Reither forest path, 14 stations provide insights into the life of bees: Why do bees dance? What is a bee hotel? And why is it so important that we take good care of all wild and honey bees and protect them?
Wildsee: Pack your bathing suit! Because a jump into the Wildsee is a must on this tour. At the open-air swimming pool Strandperle, there’s also a heated pool and a separate children's area. The large children's playground as well as the minigolf and pit-pat facility or the beach volleyball court provide action. Or you can rent a pedalo and take a round on the lake? And of course, there's a refreshing ice cream available too!
Tip: Between Seefeld and Reith, you can also take the train and save some distance! Tickets including bike transport can be purchased online or directly at the stations.
- Highlights: Bee Path, Wild Lake
- Places to Eat: Restaurant Strandperle, numerous cafés & restaurants in Seefeld and Reith
4. Bodenalm between Scharnitz – Seefeld
"We are cycling today to a mountain hut – there will be something good to eat, a playground, and many small & large animals. Are you coming with us?" – "YAAAA"
This is how it might sound when you tell your children about the cycling trip to the Bodenalm. This mountain hut is located approximately in the middle of the total distance on the connecting route between the towns of Seefeld and Scharnitz (the access branches off from the main path – pay attention to the hiking signs! The last stretch from the turnoff is done on foot). On this tour, you can also choose your starting point individually and decide after the stop how far you want to continue cycling in either direction before heading back to the starting point. Here you can find regional delicacies, relaxation, a lot of play, and even more fun in the surroundings of the wonderful Lehenwald.
- Highlights: Playground, small & large animals to watch
- Dining options: Bodenalm
5. Hinterautal - Source of Isar
This tour promises adventure in full measure. The eyes of every child light up as soon as they spot some wild water – so off we go to the Hinterautal. Untamed, rugged, and untouched, the turquoise Isar springs here and makes its way from here until it flows into the Danube after almost 300 km. You can determine the length of the tour individually – you will always find beautiful meadow spots by the water, where you can take a break, build dams or dip your feet into the ice-cold & fresh spring water.
Whether you continue cycling afterwards or slowly turn back is entirely up to you. Adventurous ones can even hike directly to the source of the Isar after 12 kilometers. At the end of the valley, the rustic Kastenalm awaits you with a dreamy view of the surrounding peaks and a hearty snack or homemade cake!
But don't worry – if you turn back before that, you can refresh yourself at the valley exit in the Cafe in der Länd. Right next door at the nature experience playground, you can let loose once again. And if you are interested in the history of the Karwendel valleys and the "Holzer", you will also find the "Museum Holzerhütte" here.
- Highlights: Water play at the Isar, Isar spring, Nature Experience Playground, Museum Holzerhütte
- Dining options: Kastenalm, Café in der Länd
