Biking with Kids – the 5 Best Tours for the Whole Family
"Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike." John F. Kennedy captured the magic of cycling perfectly – and it couldn’t be more true. A magic that you can easily share with the whole family. As a bike-loving mom, I can absolutely confirm that. So let’s go – hop on the saddle! With these 5 tours, family biking turns into real quality time, where fun and adventure are guaranteed.
1. Family Adventure Trail
With kids, the journey itself is always the destination. And on this trail, there’s so much to discover in nature and the great outdoors. The Family Adventure Bike Trail makes exactly that possible. Variety is guaranteed along the way, as the route follows the Leutascher Ache through the Leutasch Valley – which means plenty of water fun is included!
Just half a kilometre after starting at the Weidach Bridge car park, you’ll reach the first highlight of the tour: the adventure playground. Climbing and play features keep the little ones entertained while mom and dad relax on the rotating sun loungers. Plus, the direct access to the Leutascher Ache brings the action – building dams and splashing around together is a must here!
Once everyone is back in the saddle, you roll on at an easy pace to the newly built suspension bridge in Ahrn and watch the climbers at the Flämenwandl climbing area. Afterwards, it’s time for a well-deserved stop at Gasthaus Brücke – complete with children’s playground, barefoot path and a family photo spot! What more could you want?
- Highlights: Adventure playground, suspension bridge, Flämenwandl climbing area
- Places to stop: Gasthaus Brücke
2. Tillfussalm
THE perfect MTB starter tour for families! While the route does include some short ascents, the downhill stretches that follow always provide a chance to recover. The motto here: just take it easy!
Cycling alongside the turquoise-blue Leutascher Ache, you make your way right into the pasture paradise of the Gaistal Valley.
Once you arrive at the Tillfussalm, you can admire the historic hunting lodge Hubertus – which even used to have its own tennis court – perched above the alpine pasture, and let yourself drift into a bygone era. Whether dumplings, a hearty Tyrolean “Brettljause” platter or Kaiserschmarrn made from regional ingredients – the Alm’s kitchen offers something for everyone.
Well-fueled, you then roll gently back down the valley. For those wanting to turn it into a real hut-to-hut tour, there’s the option to branch off to the Gaistalalm on the return trip and enjoy another culinary stop – complete with playground and sandbox for the kids right outside the hut! And even when you’re back at the starting point, the family adventure isn’t quite over yet: the fresh spring-water play area with Kneipp pool is waiting for some splashing and fun!
- Highlights: Leutascher Ache, Salzbach water playground & Kneipp pool
- Places to stop: Tillfussalm, Gaistalalm
3. Connection Seefeld–Reith
This bike tour is much more than “just” a connection between two places. A bee nature trail, a lake for swimming and splashing, playgrounds and plenty of spots to stop for a bite make it an ideal family ride. You can also decide for yourself whether to start in Seefeld or in Reith (Note: Depending on the starting point, the route goes uphill along the trail to the Wildsee (Reith–Seefeld) or downhill (Seefeld–Reith)) – and shape your day just the way you like it. Here are your must-sees along the route:
On the Bee Nature Trail along the Reither Forest Path, 14 stations give fascinating insights into the life of bees: Why do bees dance? What’s a bee hotel? And why is it so important to protect both wild and honeybees?
Wildsee: Don’t forget your swimsuits! A dip in the Wildsee is an absolute must on this tour. At the Strandperle outdoor pool you’ll also find a heated basin and a dedicated kids’ area. A large playground, mini gol & pit-pat, and a beach volleyball court provide even more action. Or how about renting a pedal boat for a lap around the lake? And of course – there’s always a refreshing ice cream waiting!
Tip: Between Seefeld and Reith, you can also take the train and save part of the route! Tickets, including bicycle transport, can be purchased online or directly at the stations.
- Highlights: Bee Nature Trail, Wildsee
- Places to stop: Restaurant Strandperle, various cafés & restaurants in Seefeld and Reith
4. Bodenalm between Scharnitz and Seefeld
“We’re biking to an alpine hut today – there’ll be delicious food, a playground, and lots of animals big and small. Are you coming?” – “YEEES!”
That’s exactly how it might sound when you tell your kids about the bike trip to the Bodenalm. On this connecting tour between Seefeld and Scharnitz, the hut is located almost exactly halfway along the route (the access branches off from the main trail – follow the hiking signs! The final section from the junction must be covered on foot). You can freely choose your starting point, and after your stop at the Alm you can still decide how far to continue in either direction before heading back.
At the Bodenalm, you’ll find regional specialties, relaxation, plenty of play opportunities and lots of fun – all surrounded by the beautiful Lehenwald forest.
- Highlights: Playground, animals big and small to watch
- Places to stop: Bodenalm
5. Hinterautal – The Source of the River Isar
This tour promises adventure all the way. As every parent knows – wherever there’s wild water, kids’ eyes light up. So off you go into the Hinterautal valley! Wild, rugged and untouched, this is where the turquoise-blue River Isar has its source, before making its 300 km journey to the Danube.
You can decide the length of the tour yourself – there are plenty of beautiful alpine meadows along the river where you can take a break, build dams, or dip your toes into the icy-cold spring water.
Whether you continue further up the valley or turn back at a leisurely pace is entirely up to you. The ambitious can even hike directly to The Source of the River Isar after about 12 kilometres. At the end of the valley, the rustic Kastenalm awaits with stunning mountain views and hearty Tyrolean snacks or homemade cake.
But no worries – if you turn back earlier, you can stop for a refreshment at Café in der Länd near the valley entrance. Right next door, the nature adventure playground invites kids to climb and play. And those curious about the history of the Karwendel valleys and the traditional woodworkers (Holzer) will also find the small “Holzerhütte Museum” there.
- Highlights: Playing by the Isar, The Source of the River Isar, nature adventure playground, Holzerhütte Museum
- Places to stop: Kastenalm, Café in der Länd
